Today, I wanted to reflect on something people say to me quite often when they find out I am a preschool teacher. "It must be nice to just play all day." My friends have said it to me. Acquaintances that I have met while out with my family say it to me. Parents of the children in my class have said it to me. I usually just say, "It sure is," and then move on with my life. The reality of preschool is that we do play, because play is the best way that very young children can learn. While we are playing dress up in home living, we are learning how to interact with each other socially. We are learning problem solving skills, communication skills, and how to cooperate with each other. When we are playing with blocks, we are working on our fine-motor skills. Block play teaches us spatial skills, creative thinking, and more language development. Playing with puzzles teaches us problem solving, fine motor skills, and patience. Every area that we "play" in throughout the day is teaching your child skills that he can build upon in the future. Preschool lays the foundation and love of learning that will go throughout life with your child. So while it may look like we are just playing, we are learning as well.
We had a great day today. We talked about the letter S and painted spider webs.
